U.S. Security Associates Honors ‘Heroes’ at ASIS

Not all heroes wear a cape. Often, they are everyday people who work amongst us. Security Officers, Associates, Executives, and Managers who see a need and rise to the occasion to provide better outcomes

U.S. Security Associates (USA), the market-leading, wholly-owned American security solutions provider, honored three heroes with the company’s first Hero Awards at this year’s ASIS International Annual Seminar and Exhibits (ASIS 2017). All of USA’s Associates work diligently to provide our clients better outcomes, but on occasion there are those who go far above the call for service.

Although they don’t leap tall buildings or move faster than a speeding bullet, these individuals are heroes for their sacrifice and motivation to ensure the safety, security, and livelihood of others. They each embody the meaning of the word “Hero” through their selfless actions.

“Not all heroes wear a cape,” USA President and CEO Richard L. Wyckoff said last week at the Dallas, TX, conference for security professionals. “Often, they are everyday people who work amongst us. Security Officers, Associates, Executives, and Managers who see a need and rise to the occasion to provide better outcomes.”

Security Officer Roderick “R.J.” Nowlin, Regional Vice President John McCracken, and Area Vice President Larry Price each rose above their ordinary responsibilities to help save lives.

In July, a frantic Benjamin and Angela Anderton brought their unconscious 2-year-old son Judah to the guard station where Nowlin was on duty. They’d just found Judah drowning in their pool nearby, and the toddler hadn’t been breathing for more than 10 minutes.

USA’s emergency first responder training and industry-leading SecuritySTARS® initiative provided Nowlin the skills needed to save the child’s life. His quick thinking and superior life-saving skills gave Judah and his parents the ultimate better outcome: another chance at life.

After Hurricane Harvey hit the Houston area, McCracken went out on his boat to survey the damage to client sites, and his recon expedition turned into a rescue mission.

Over the course of two days, he was able to ferry 80 people from flooded and storm-ravaged homes to dry land and safety before having to return to pluck his own family from rising waters.

Among the rescued were 49 children,11 dogs, and two cats.

Well before Hurricanes Harvey and Irma made landfall, Price had devised a plan to keep Associates who would be on post in the path of these storms connected to USA’s network of Managers and capable of keeping client sites safe and secure.

From outlining a transportation plan and arranging accommodations for displaced Security Officers to establishing an effective communications network and making sure Associates were able to be paid despite potential power outages, Price steered the teams in Florida and Texas through both the pre-planning and the aftermath of the hurricanes.

His methods were so effective that they have become the protocol for all future USA disaster preparedness efforts.
