In 2017 alone, almost 2.2 million Americans applied for social security disability benefits.
CLEARWATER, Fla. (PRWEB) May 23, 2018
More than 10.4 million people in the United States received disability benefits in 2017, according to the Social Security Administration (SSA). While the number of applications for social security disability (SSDI) benefits dropped 6.1% from 2016, the percentage of individuals awarded benefits climbed slightly.
“In 2017 alone, almost 2.2 million Americans applied for social security disability benefits,” said Tampa Bay Social Security Disability attorney Betty Marion Whitman of Carlson, Meissner, Hart & Hayslett P.A. “Of those applicants, more than one third were awarded benefits, receiving an average monthly payment of $1,060.”
The Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) program is a federal insurance program that is funded from payroll taxes and managed by the Social Security Administration. SSDI is designed to provide income supplements to disabled individuals who have made sufficient contributions through FICA taxes.
“To qualify for disability benefits, applicants must have a medical condition that meets the Social Security Administration’s definition of disability,” continued attorney Whitman. “The Social Security Administration uses an evaluation process to determine eligibility, which includes considering the nature of the disability, age, work experience, education, and other factors. Many disabled workers wonder if they are eligible to receive benefits, but they become increasingly frustrated by the cumbersome application process.”
